How we became the "GLLA Legends"
In May of 2025 we were finally able to introduce Erie the Lake Monster, our official mascot, and a symbol of our vibrant school community. Erie inspires us to embrace our individuality, chase our dreams, and contribute to the rich tapestry of our school's story. Together, we'll write the next chapter of GLLA's legend.
Erie is a descendant of the legendary Lake Erie Monster (Bessie). More than just a mythical creature, Erie is a symbol of the greatness we see in every student, teacher, and member of our community. At GLLA, we believe legends aren't just stories; they're made every day. Our school is a place where students are empowered to write their own legends. How was our new mascot chosen? Our "Water Monster" mascot, a nod to both the Loch Ness Monster (Nessie) and the Lake Erie Monster (Bessie), emerged through a multi-stage process over several months where students were encouraged to submit, and vote on ideas. The concept garnered a strong 48% of the vote in a community-wide selection. Click here to see all the original idea submissions. The winning concept and inspiring student artwork were then sent to the Connections Academy design team, who developed the final artwork. Whose idea sparked it? The idea of a mythical water creature, connecting to the Great Lakes, resonated with several students. We especially want to recognize eighth graders Aydyn E. and Amayah A. for their fantastic lake monster designs, which provided valuable inspiration!
