LEGENDARY Essay Contest - Win your own Erie Monster

In a minimum of 200 words choose an essay topic from below. Essays should be sent via email or webmail to Corrie Groth (contact information below) by Friday, March 6th! Six Lucky winners will receive their very own Erie stuffie in the mail!

Winners with media consent will also have their work shared here!

Essay Topic Options:
  1. Every legend begins somewhere. Write the origin story of Erie the Lake Monster, or a new legend inspired by Erie that reflects courage, curiosity or creativity.
  2. Legends don’t always wear armor. Write about a time you, or someone you know did something legendary, small or big!
  3. Erie believes everyone has a legend inside them. What actions, choices, or qualities make someone legendary? Use examples from your life, history or your imagination.

What should be included in your essay?
  • Full Name (First and Last)
  • Current Grade Level
  • Title
  • Minimum of 200 words
  • Story has a distinct beginning, middle and end
  • Font: Times New Roman 12pt.
  • Double Spaced
  • Correct spelling, punctuation and grammar
  • All submissions should be sent to Corrie Groth by March 6th (contact information below).
  • BONUS: Can be used as a narrative writing assignment for English class! Check with your teacher for more information!
    • English 9A Unit 7
    • English 12A Unit 7

Tips for bringing your narrative to life from the English Department:
  • Engage the five senses: Don't just tell us what happened; make us hear the gravel, crunch, smell the rain, and feel the heat! Use sensory detail! Example: The food was good. vs The steam smelled like garlic and rosemary.
  • Show, Don't Tell: Instead of telling us a character is "angry," show us their white knuckles or their trembling voice. Instead of telling us she was "nervous", show us her tapping her pen against the desk incessantly.
  • The 5 W's + H: Ensure your reader is never lost. Ground your story by clearly establishing the Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. This helps root the reader in a specific time and place.
  • Dynamic Dialogue: Use conversation to reveal personality and move the plot forward. Let your characters speak for themselves rather than just explaining every thought in your text.
