Student Volunteers
At GLLA we believe that volunteering is a rewarding experience for all ages and encourage our students to take part in making a difference in their local communities. Throughout the year we will use this space to promote and celebrate volunteer opportunities. If you really enjoy helping others you might consider applying to join the GLLA National Honor Society!
Share Opportunities & Stories If you have volunteer opportunities that you would like to promote to other students or stories about work that you have done that you are willing to share, please let us know by reaching out to: Corrie Groth Webmail [email protected] 810-243-4577 |
2023-2024 NHS Shoe Drive:
GLLA National Honor Society students promoted a shoe drive in conjunction with our field trip to Belle Isle in May of 2024. NHS members made a flyer and a video encouraging students from all over the state to collect new and gently used footwear to help those in need. Students were encouraged to donate their collections to a local organization of their choice or bring them to our field trip where they were sorted, tagged by size and donated to Footprints of Michigan! Over 200 shoes were collected!

GLLA Student Makes a Positive ImpactHow did you spend your summer? It’s a question we’re all familiar with! For Landon Davis, a freshman at Great Lakes Learning Academy, his time last summer (2023) was spent making a positive impact on the other side of the world.
Along with his dad, Landon joined a group of local volunteers as they geared up to travel to Moldova, where many Ukrainian refugees were seeking shelter from war. The relief group, organized by local church Elevate, spent 11 days assisting families crossing the border, meeting locals and working closely with them to provide much needed support. During the group’s 12-hour workdays, Landon would help by coordinating housing, dispersing food and hygiene supplies, organizing shelters and interacting with the younger refugees in the area. His enthusiasm to support was unrivaled, and although he was considerably younger than most of the members of the relief group, he was always ready to be of assistance. Great Lakes Learning Academy is proud of the incredible contributions Landon made last summer and is glad he was able to learn and experience throughout his journey. As Landon and his dad look ahead at more opportunities to support vulnerable populations around the world, we look forward to seeing his continued growth at Great Lakes Learning Academy and the great things he will accomplish in the future. |
